Town of Clayton Water Tower at Sunset
Welcome the Town of Clayton, North Carolina

Thank you to everyone who enjoyed our free 2017 Summer Reading Program!
We had a wonderful finale on July 29th with more than 120 people enjoying Professor Obediah's Magical Emporium!

Even Children's Librarian Mary Creech got into the costumed with the Professor this incredible magical experience!  And check out the phenomenon we helped ignite with The Kindness Rocks Project!  Wow!  We love how many people jumped in to paint rocks with inspirational sayings and hide them around town! We ARE building a better world by spreading positive vibes!

We hope everyone will join us next summer for the 2018 Summer Reading Program!  If you love reading, need a place to escape the heat, want to have fun AND learn something fascinating and new - then the place to be is the Clayton Library. We plan FREE programs almost every day of the week for Summer Reading!  Dozens of children from pre-K through elementary school join us every June and July at 100 South Church Street. We have puppet shows, story time, crafts and super awesome guests and activities. We've even taken some little field trips outside of the library to neat locations all around Town.

Our special Summer Reading Program has ended, but Story Times are still on for August! We won't be having crafts, but we'll definitely be reading stories and having fun!  Please bring YOUR favorite stories and we'll share some of ours!

Every Tuesday, 4:30 p.m (K-5th Grade)
Every Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. (Preschool)
Every Thursday, 10:00 a.m. (Lapsit/Babies)
Every Saturday, 10:00 a.m. (Preschool)

Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library participates in the Collaborative Summer Library Programs, a statewide coordinated program that began in the summer of 1980. It encourages all ages to continue to improve their reading skills during the months when school is not in session. With guidance and assistance from this state program, our library hosts elaborate programs for families, kids, teens and adults! We team up with awesome sponsors and great community partners so that we can have something going on almost every other day!

  • To encourage and motivate children and families to read for pleasure
  • To help school age children maintain their reading skills while on school holiday
  • To introduce children and their families to the resources of their public library
  • To attract new customers to their library
  • To establish the library as a vital part of community life
  • To promote community involvement in the mission of the library
  • To create positive publicity for the library
  • To establish a partnership with the school community
  • To increase circulation of library material

If you're 13-18 years old, we’d love for you to volunteer for our Summer Reading Program where you might read to pre-school and elementary school children, help with special guests and assist with preparing and making fun crafts with the kids. Lots of fun!  Click here to find the library volunteer application form!
