Conducting traffic stops, going through an interactive police weapons simulator, and visiting the Johnston County jail - those are just some of the activities Town of Clayton teenagers can experience in our annual week-long summer academy conducted by the Town of Clayton Police Department. The academy is aimed at providing positive interaction with police officers and educating young people about the challenges and responsibility of police work. We also hope it will encourage young people to take part in their community.

This free academy will run from July 17 through July 21, 2017 at the Clayton Police Department and is open to teens ages 15-18 years old. The academy will start at 9 a.m. and dismiss at 2 p.m. each day.

Students will attend classroom sessions with lectures, role-plays and demonstrations by police officers in the areas of law, behavioral science, drug prevention, gang resistance, and life skills. Field trips are also part of the curriculum. Transportation to and from the field trips will be provided. Students are expected to dress casually and appropriately. Students will be expected to provide their own lunch/snacks for the days attending and have transportation to and from the Clayton Police Department at the start and end of each day.

If you're interested, just fill out this application with the required parent signature and return to the Clayton Police Department or Officer Owen Phillips. Call 919-554-4611 for more information.

At the end of the week, students may contemplate a law enforcement career or maybe they'll simply walk away with a better understanding of what the men and women of the Clayton Police Department do each day and night.

Participants tour the department where they met our officers - including our K-9 officers. They venture to the county seat of Smithfield where they visit the Johnston County Courthouse, the jail and the 911 emergency call center. Teens even get a chance to experience an officer's training in a live weapons scenario with a virtual simulator!  Talk about an interesting week walking in the shoes of our dedicated law enforcement officers!

We would like to give a huge thank you to Town of Clayton Employee of the Year and former Clayton Police Officer of the Year Owen Phillips for his hands-on involvement and planning which helped make this Summer Youth Academy a reality. The Town of Clayton's Police Department is always working to educate our youth, and build a closer relationship with the community and our families.
