Accounting Tech Anne Abene is "Employee of Year"

Senior Accounting Technician Anne Abene has been named the town's "Employee of the Year" for 2011.

The 5-year employee, who grew up wanting to be a nurse but switched to accounting because she said it better fits her personality, was praised for her skill and dedication.

"Anne always has a smile and a pleasant comment for everyone," said Deputy Town Manager Nancy Medlin. "She is dedicated, hardworking, and loyal. She is the epitome of "Employee of the Year."

She said accounting was a logical choice for a career since she enjoyed the accounting courses she took in high school "and my dad said there will always be a need for accounts."

"I was good at, and I enjoyed it," Anne said. "I like seeing things balance. I like seeing things in the right place. There's order to accounting, and I like order."

She said her job at Town Hall "fits me very well."

"Not to mention, it's right here at home, which makes it an even better fit. I feel very fortunate to live in Clayton and work in Clayton. It's a special place to be."

Anne said she was "very surprised" by the award.

"It's a good feeling to know that someone has recognized your efforts," she said.

In her spare time, Anne volunteers for the Wilmington Street Mission, a shelter for homeless men in Raleigh. It started as a church project, but is now a fixture in her life.

"It's a really good place to help other people," she said. "You know what's important, and you have a really good feeling when you come out of there. I would encourage everyone to find some way of giving back. There are lots of ways of doing that."

Anne said she recognizes the importance of her job and her volunteer work, but her two children "are my biggest and most important accomplishment."

A life-long Clayton resident, she once attended school in what is now Town Hall and the Clayton Center.

"After all these years, I feel like I'm still coming to school each day," she said.

Officer Miguel Duran of the Clayton Police Force was last year's Employee of the Year.
